Indigenous Birth Conference

Our annual Indigenous Birth Conference is a gathering dedicated to celebrating, supporting, and advancing the work of Indigenous midwives, healers, and advocates.

Honoring the vital role of midwives as cultural and community leaders, this conference has, since its inception, served as a powerful platform for sharing knowledge, fostering community, and addressing the unique challenges and strengths of Indigenous maternal and healthcare practices.

How it Started

The Indigenous Birth Conference originated from a deep-seated desire to create a sanctuary for cultural exchange, honoring the traditions and addressing the unique challenges of Indigenous maternal healthcare.

Celebrating Unity and Wisdom

The inaugural Indigenous Birth Conference was held in 2023, marking a significant milestone in bringing Indigenous midwives, healers, and advocates together in a dedicated space for sharing knowledge and building community. This gathering was born from the vision of creating a sanctuary for cultural exchange, honoring the wisdom of Indigenous midwives, and addressing the unique challenges faced in maternal and community healthcare.

The Growing Impact of the Indigenous Birth Conference

While still in its early stages, the conference has already begun to establish itself as an essential platform for midwives and healthcare advocates. Participants explored topics such as birth sovereignty, healthcare access, and the preservation of ancestral knowledge. With each future gathering, the conference aims to grow in impact, continuing to uplift and empower Indigenous midwives as they lead the way in community health and healing.

Our Service Offerings

Indigenous Birth offers a range of services rooted in tradition, healing, and advocacy to support families, communities, and organizations.

Through scholarships and skill-based training, we empower Indigenous midwives, students, and elders with the resources and knowledge they need to strengthen their communities.

Empowering Indigenous Practitioners

By centering Indigenous speakers, presenters, and topics, the conference amplifies voices that honor Native, Alaska Indian, and tribally affiliated midwifery traditions, celebrating cultural diversity.

Elevating Indigenous Voices and Perspectives

Fostering Community and Ceremony

We create a unique space for networking, healing, and ceremony, where Indigenous midwives and birth workers can connect, restore, and honor ancestral traditions together.

Like most vocational and midwifery/birth related conferences, we seek to offer:

  • CEU’s

  • Skill-based workshops/trainings (assessing tongue tie, for example)

  • Preconference workshops required for certifications/licensure (neonatal resuscitation, for example)

  • Speakers of distinction in the field

  • Networking opportunities

We seek distinction by:

  • Providing numerous full and partial scholarships to indigenous midwifery and birth related students

  • Providing numerous full and partial scholarships to indigenous elders

  • Partnering with indigenous presenters and vendors

  • Honoring indigenous diversity

  • Honoring Native American, Alaska Indian and land based, tribally affiliated midwives and student midwives with conference programming specific to tribal and land based native midwifery and birth work.

  • Focusing General Sessions and Keynotes on issues specific to indigenous culture

  • Creating healing spaces

  • Honoring ceremony

Indigenous Birth is committed to honoring, empowering, and advocating for Indigenous midwives and traditional birth practices, ensuring cultural resilience, health equity, and the reclamation of birth sovereignty.
