Data Mapping for Birth Sovereignty

This project focuses on mapping midwifery access across the Arizona-Mexico border to track and support Indigenous midwives and traditional birth practices.

By documenting resources, knowledge, and significant sites, we aim to empower Indigenous communities in reclaiming and preserving birth sovereignty.

Goal of the
Data Mapping Project

The Data Mapping for Birth Sovereignty project aims to create a comprehensive resource that maps the presence, accessibility, and contributions of Indigenous midwives along the Arizona-Mexico border.

Reclaiming Sacred Practices

This project seeks to address the need for visibility and accessibility of Indigenous midwives within their communities, preserving vital knowledge and providing a foundation for future generations.
By documenting traditional birth practices, geographic locations, medicinal plants, and culturally significant landmarks, we aim to build a resource that Indigenous communities can use to reclaim and strengthen their birth sovereignty. Additionally, this mapping will inform policies and initiatives that support Indigenous midwifery access, allowing midwives and healers to work with greater autonomy and respect.

Ultimately, this project will serve as a tool to reconnect Indigenous people to traditional birthing knowledge and to facilitate cross-community collaboration in reclaiming these sacred practices.
